Alarm for Britain's
Young
The
news that depression and anxiety in the young is
increasing was I'm afraid all too predictable.
During the late 1990s the average prescription
total for antidepressants for teenagers in
England was 49.000 per year. In 2006 this total
had risen to more than 620,000. Surely, this
escalation proves that despite a social system
of living where every dream is possible, the
basic ingredients for happiness are sorely
lacking. Excessive gaming, celebrity worship,
and ever more pressure to mature sexually are
certainly elements of young life I would like to
see examined more closely. even given
past reluctance to confront child issues, this
increase in antidepressant use is alarming. |

Fat Gene
There was understandably a great deal of
interest in the recent announcement that a `fat
gene` had been discovered. If a gene is indeed
responsible for bodyweight fluctuation and fat
retention, working on a viable solution for
obesity and the like could now be firmly
embraced. Unfortunately, just as quickly as
hopes were raised, they were dealt a major blow.
A lone fat gene, had in fact not been proven to
be totally responsible for rises in bodyweight.
This confusion only serves to highlight the risk
of holding out for a miracle, or dare I say it,
an easier way to become healthier. Some of us,
do of course, have metabolisms prone to gaining
weight, but invariably, physical destiny's are
decided by dietary effort and consistency, not
how many calories of a chocolate bar our bodies
retain. |
